Literacy

Our literacy program is designed by our Literacy Specialist, Carrie Sgarlata, with consultation from Alisia Moutry, our Education Coordinator.

Teach first, practice second.

Layups

Our first team is for 4th grade boys in Milwaukee. We practice twice a week at 4:30pm Wednesday and Friday at the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, 5460 N. 64th Street.

Before any basketball is played each of the teammates will take part in the literacy program. And they get snacks.

Today’s students.
Tomorrow’s leaders.

We have lofty goals for our program. We want to move beyond basketball with a strong emphasis on education—stressing literacy alongside basketball fundamentals.

Before any basketball is played at practice (4:30pm every Wednesday and Friday) each of the teammates will take part in a literacy program.

in honor of

Sam Waisbren

We started this program to honor Sam Waisbren, who passed too soon. Sam grew up playing on a basketball team his father started in an under-served community out of the Northcott Community Center. He often reflected on how important this experience was in his development and outlook on the world.

There is no legacy Sam would have loved more than his passing leading to revitalized support for this kind of constructive after-school program.
